Tardive Dyskinesia

Medications for Tardive Dyskinesia

About Tardive Dyskinesia:  Tardive dyskinesia are involuntary movements, particularly of the face, that develop after exposure to several medications called neuroleptics. The movements include tongue thrusting jaw swinging facial grimacing.

The most typically used offending neuroleptics are typical (old generation) antipsychotic medications, such as haloperidol, trifluoperazine, or fluphenazine. They act by blocking dopamine receptors in your brain.

The condition could be reversible, even if understood at the most early stages, by quitting the causative agent, but may be permanent. On occasion, after the tardive dyskinesia has been present for a very long while in the event the anti-psychotics are ceased, the condition may become significantly worse.
